Chapter Four
Dear Matthew,
I do hope you will not think me presumptuous to call you by your Christian name, but your kind offer will have us become acquaintances soon enough, it seemed foolish to continue with formalities!
Thank you for the ticket. I am on my way. As you receive this I should be changing trains in Chicago, and will be bound for Great Falls in just a few more days â on the 9th. If you are not there to greet me I shall understand â I just hope this gets to you before I do so. You will be looking for a young woman (twenty-seven is still young, at least I certainly feel it), in a rolling chair with hair as bright as a copper kettle. You may be please to know that I do not have the temper to go with it!
I have never done anything so impetuous, but circumstances at home had meant that getting away from my family for a period is necessary, and I had nowhere else to go. If your cousin cannot put me up, I shall be happy to check into a boarding house or hotel. I have some savings and the Major has been kind enough to give me a small sum to fund my convalescence.
The Major has known me since I was about five years old when he saw Mama and Papa in the Kiriakov Circus and decided they were just the Act he had to have for his show in Boston. I always thought he was crusty and bad tempered, but he has been nothing but kind since my accident. I was amazed when you said you had seen the Kiriakov Circus, and you therefore must have been describing my Mama and Papa when you did so in your letter. That they made you want to run off and join them made me feel that fate maybe has a hand in our meeting.
I do not wish to be a burden to you, or your family so I have a nurse who will be attending me. Ellen is sweet and very efficient and I have no doubt that she will wish to have me back up and on my feet in no time. She has a fiancé in Boston she longs to return home to!
I cannot thank you enough, and hope you will not regret your invitation. I shall try my best to be less bother than your young rascal!
Yours gratefully
Emily Wilkins
P.S. I have donkey called Claude, he shall be accompanying me. Is there anywhere I would be able to stable him, or put him out to pasture nearby? I am happy to pay whatever it takes. He is my oldest and dearest friend.
