“You know Tosci is going to figure out everything, don’t you?” asked Grinnell as he led her back to the woman in question’s house.

“I do.” She wrapped an arm around him. “But I don’t care. She will just have to deal with it.”

He wrapped an arm around her as well. “And what about your sister? Will she have to deal with it too?”

“May wanted us together.”

She said it so matter-of-factly that it surprised him.

“Okay, but what about Moorac?” He walked next to the creek so Mehanna could walk on the drier section of the path. “The moment he figures out you have bonded with me, he will go after your sister.”

“I know. I’ve thought about that too. We need to protect her, I’m just not real sure how yet.”

“And your overly protective guardian?” he asked. “You know she was against this in the first place.”

“She was just trying to protect me.” She leaned into him. “Now that it’s done, she’ll have to help us.”

“I hope so.”

The house came into view.

“Here we go.” Grinnell took her hand, and they walked into the yard.

“It’s about time you two showed up. We have a lot of work to do.” Tosci gestured for Mehanna to follow her. Grinnell went to stand next to Lawaya.

“So did you mate?” Lawaya asked softly.

“Now you know I’m not going to answer that.” He didn’t look at her but watched Mehanna instead.

“How long do you think you can keep us in the dark?” She pointed to Tosci. “That woman is a bloodhound.”

“You are focusing on the wrong thing. We need to think about how we’re going to defeat that man without getting ourselves killed.”

“He uses magic.” Lawaya wasn’t deterred. “I can disguise myself, and they can use magic against him. But you, my friend, need to stay as far away from him as you can.”

“Can he tell the difference between magic and the Barou power?” Grinnell asked, still trying to steer the conversation away from their bonding.

“You mean if I were to create something, would he know it’s not really there?” Lawaya shifted her weight as she thought. “The way our powers work is that only a master can see through another Barou’s imaging. So as long as he’s not aware that we’re Barou, our illusions should trick him.”

He looked at her. “So you could trick him into thinking you have magic too?”

“I guess. At least for a little while.”

“And if we had more help?”

She stepped back and shook her head. “I can’t ask the Barou council to sanction this.”

“I’m not thinking about the council.” He touched her arm and smiled. “I’m thinking about our friends on Emori. We have two more Barou masters, another magic wielder, and a shapeshifter. The odds are better with them.”

“And what if they don’t want to help?”

“There is only one way to find out.” Grinnell turned and headed back to his ship.
