“I should go.” Sofia leaned on the door and watched Noah put himself to rights for the second time this evening. A devious smile escaped. She hadn’t come upstairs with any other intention than conversation and a kiss. But she was happy. Noah was a good man.

“Yes,” Noah said, his expression soft with affection. “Let me check the hallway. I thought I heard something a minute ago.”

Cracking the door, he peered out from the landing and then closed it immediately.

“Alessandro just entered. Does he usually keep these late hours?”

“I don’t know.” She wrinkled her nose as she considered this news. “He may have visited a ladybird. Although I saw him near Bond Street recently and that’s not somewhere he normally goes. Alessandro is not foolish. He’d never become involved with a nob. Both my brothers care little for aristocrats and their pretentious airs.”

Noah cleared his throat. “Perhaps you should wait a while longer before you return downstairs.”

“I don’t think that would be wise.” She tried to stifle her smile but failed miserably. “Alessandro will go straight to his room and I’m light on my feet. He’ll never hear me when I enter in another few minutes.”

“If you’re sure.” Noah pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head. “I wouldn’t want there to be trouble.”

Sofia sighed with content; her cheek pressed to his chest as she savored his warm scent and the caress of his breath in her hair. “Me either. The last thing I need is for my brothers to discover me here with you. No good can come from that.”
