Chapter 36
My room is my sanctuary. Itâs the only place where everything is in orderâwhere it all makes sense. Laid out on my desk in pristine arrangement is the plan for the day. The shipment of drugs Iâm in charge of should be boarding the plane and taking off within the hour.
I pick up my phone to call my lead guy for an update on the final stage of the shipment. The line rings five times before going to voicemail. Thatâs odd. Dimitri is one of my most loyal men, and also the most responsive. The only time he has ever missed a call from me was when his daughter was in the hospital last year. He knows better than to test me. I press the call button again, nearly throwing my phone across the room when Iâm sent to voicemail for the second time.
What the fuck is going on?
I make a call to the operator in the tower on the runway today who is in charge of making sure the plane takes off with no hiccups.
âH.. Hello?â he answers, voice shaking like he knows heâs in trouble.
âWhere the fuck is Dimitri?â I ask him, my tone deadly.
âH.. Heâs right here. We um, weâre all right here sir.â
âWhere the fuck is right here, Radcliff?â I bark. My patience is thrown out the window faster than a toupee in a fucking hurricane.
Dimitriâs voice comes over the phone next, âWe are currently in the tower, sir. Being held at gunpoint. A group of men who have yet to say a single word ambushed the plane and stole the shipment. Based on the fact that they are letting us speak to you, they wanted you to know.â
A woosh of air leaves his lungs, letting me know he received a hit in the gut for pointing out their motives.
âListen here, fuckers. When I find out who you are, the wrath of the entire Russian mafia will be on your ass. It will be a cold day in hell when you manage to hide from me and my reach,â I say, my tone cold.
A bark of laughter sounds in the background before someoneâs voice I donât recognize speaks up. âWe are already hidden from you, Mikhas. We are in the shadows, in the background at every turn. You will never find us because we are The Shades. I donât know who youâve pissed off in this life, ditya, but I would watch your movements closely. We know the tactics your men use when anything deviates from the plan. Even something as small as a driver getting the shits.â
âMotherfucker!â I hear Callum yell in the background, having received my wrath already for leaving my drugs on the side of the road while he was sick for over an hour.
The man who calls himself a Shade chuckles. âIâd advise you to lay low, kid. Whoever sent us after you, they are angry. If they can pay for our services, they have a lot more reach than you could ever hope to achieve.
