Salvatore follows along behind me, saying nothing as I search through the mall for a new camera. Mine hit the ground a few days ago, shattering into a dozen different pieces.

The camera was dead on impact.

“You know, if you don’t want to be here, I can finish shopping on my own,” I say as I step into another camera store and start browsing through the display models.

Salvatore sighs and keeps pace behind me. “I don’t want to be here but we both know that there is no going out without me after that message you got two nights ago.”

“They only said they wanted to kill me. Nobody ever said that they were going to kill me. As far as I’m concerned, I’m in the clear.”

He scoffs as I adjust my baseball hat. I pick up one of the display models and turn it on, pointing it at one of the shelves on the other side of the store. I adjust some of the settings and snap a few pictures before setting it back down.

“You’re not in the clear. Matteo is getting here later today. After that, he is going to be watching over you. I already cleared it with Brennan. I’ve been spending too much time following you around and not enough time building the family business.”

His words cut deep but I keep my emotionless mask in place, not wanting to let him know how much he is hurting me.

Since finding out about the baby, he’s barely said anything to me. What little he has said has nothing to do with the baby or what he wants to do about it.

The more time I spend thinking about the future, the more I’m sure I’m going to be raising the baby on my own.

That's fine with me.

I can make my own little family. I don’t need a man who doesn’t want either of us to be involved with our lives.

“Look, I appreciate the concern, but I don’t think it’s necessary. You don’t want to be here, and quite frankly, I don’t want you to be here either. We will both be happier if we’re alone.”

He rolls his eyes as I head for another camera. “Unfortunately for us, Brennan makes the rules right now. Not me. Certainly not you.”

“Well, great, then let’s just agree to not talk to each other and pretend that the other one doesn’t exist. Like you said, Matteo will be here later and then there’s no need for either of us to talk to each other again.”

“Perfect. That’s exactly what I want. Glad we finally got each other figured out.”

Salvatore’s jaw clenches as he spins away from me and starts to look at other cameras. I sigh and inspect my options, needing to put more distance between us before I break down and ask him to tell me what the hell is going through his head.

I’m tired of trying to figure him out.

I need a break. Something easy in my life for once.

Walking away from him is going to be that easy thing.
