The next day Madelyn didn’t attend training. Instead, she went out into the city within the Fortress and visited the merchants in the marketplace. It took the entire morning to simply go through and introduce herself to everyone, including the Tayliss merchants.

With those of Tayliss, she just let them know who she was, but with the Erlans she told them what they could expect from her, and what she could and would do for them.

They seemed happy and relieved not to have to deal with the military or the Queen directly.

It wasn’t that they didn’t like or respect Eve and Nera, they just felt that Madelyn was more accessible, and would be more available since her entire position was about them.

She spent time with the leather merchant, who became excited to start experimenting with color in her leathers. She admired the deep purple Madelyn wore that day, with her matching boots.

She was happy to know Madelyn would be there for a couple weeks, so she could share her creations first hand.

It was slightly past noon when Madelyn began her trek back to the keep. She did some sightseeing around the market, really just looking to see if there was room to expand.

Here on this border, the weather stayed temperate, so it wasn’t necessary to expand the covered shops unless someone particularly wanted one.

She was happy to see that expansion was possible for both open air, and covered shops. The Queens had planned well when they designed these Fortresses.

Her stomach grumbled, reminding her it was past lunch, and she turned to make her way to the main building.

There was a great deal of commotion at the front steps, as large groups of warriors had recently arrived. Wagons stood nearby, and parades of handsome men were disembarking wagons as warriors assisted them down like the precious creatures they were.

A beautiful, black haired woman stood on the top step talking to Nera and Eve, and Madelyn knew this had to be the Queen of Tayliss. Off to one side, another lovely black haired woman spoke to Kara.

Madelyn was trying to make her way through to the steps, but the press of warriors and other people made it nearly impossible. She sighed and stopped to look around, but there was no place she could go to that would ease her access. She didn’t want to push through though because nearly everyone looked to be carrying something to the keep.

“Are you Lady Madelyn?” A tall, lovely blonde warrior was suddenly at her side.

“I am.” She smiled at her.

“I am Leandra, Queen Saria’s Commander.” She wore a friendly smile. “We saw you down here in the crush, and My Lady bid me help you navigate the crowd.”

“Thanks.” She smiled at Leandra. “Although I was just trying not to impede progress by pushing through.”

“You will be here all day then, my Queen does not often travel light unless there is war.” Leandra smiled widely.

Madelyn laughed.

“Then lead on, My Lady”

Leandra effectively cut a path through the surging humanity, and Madelyn followed in her wake.
