Jakari
âEric and Jakari, stop the arguing right now or neither one of you will get a new phone.â My mom yelled before we got out the car. Me and my brother were going back and forth about who was better, Apple or Android.
âI like Apple better Jakari.â Jaele said and pulled hers out.
âWhatever Jaele. They donât have the same games and the galaxy pictures are better.â Eric responded and Jaele sat quiet, I guess not wanting to argue either.
My mom shook her head as she drove to the Verizon store in one of the strip malls. We all got out and one of the salespeople stepped up right away.
âHi, my sons are here to purchase new phones. One will get an Android and the other wants the Apple.â My mom told him, and her and Jaele walked around the store looking at the accessories.
âJaele, what you think about this one?â She walked over to me, and Eric moved towards my mom to show her the Android he wanted.
âWeâre having a sale today, which is, if you purchase a new phone one accessory is free.â
âDo I have to ring them up separately?â As my mom and the salesperson spoke, Jaele stayed close to my side. Eric was in his glory searching for a case and clip.
BOOM! BOOM! I heard and rushed to my mother as the glass shattered inside the store. Not knowing what was going on, I pushed my mom in the other direction and then the floor. People were screaming and bullets were flying. I had no idea who the person was and there was no time to look up or go outside because the scene was chaotic.
âJakari.â I heard Jaele in my ear but my eyes were glued to my mom. She was barely breathing.
âMa, get up.â Eric said trying to see where she was hit.
âJakari help me get her to the car.â He said but I couldnât move. I was frozen with fear, anger and most of all, hatred. Who in their right mind would shoot into a store where innocent people were?
âFuck! Somebody help me get my mom to the car, please.â Eric cried and the tears raced down his face as he tried to pick her up. We were both young so our strength is nothing like a grown mans.
People were scared to move; except one guy. He was the same sales guy who helped us. Him and Eric carried my mom to the car. The guy ran in to grab me, and Jaele screamed and pushed me to get up. Once I did, we raced to the car and the sales guy jumped in front and flew to the hospital.
Eric and I were in the backseat staring at my mom coughing up blood. I finally looked down and saw she was hit on the side of her head and in the chest. How she even survived this long is beyond me? She stared at us and her last words were,â Take care of each other.
