Chapter Five

Walt walked past Jacob’s closed office door Friday afternoon. It had been closed ever since Jacob had returned to work Wednesday. Never opened once. At least not while Walt was around. He paused a few feet past it, turning back to stare at it. Willing it to open, wanting to see Jacob. He was totally avoiding Walt and he knew it but he wasn’t sure what to do about it. If he should even try.

With a heavy sigh, he continued on to his own office even though he was in no mood to get any work done. He’d hoped so much that having sex with Jacob wouldn’t destroy their friendship, he wanted that above everything, and that’s exactly what it was doing. Ruining everything. What the fuck had he been thinking, going over to Jacob’s house?

After checking a few cases and drafting a few documents, Walt glanced at his watch and noticed it was already after six and he was supposed to pick up Rebecca for their date. Supposedly, she wouldn’t have her son and she’d told him so when he’d talked to her Thursday with a bit of a suggestive tone.

Walt finished emailing a bill to a corporate client and shut down his computer. He almost knocked on Jacob’s door as he went by on the way out, but changed his mind since he was already running a little late. In fact, when he got to his car, he called Rebecca and asked her to meet him at the restaurant he’d planned to take her.

Even as he pulled into a parking spot in front of his favorite steak restaurant, Walt’s thoughts were on Jacob and how he should have tried to talk to him again. He took out his cell and stared at Jacob’s programmed cell number. He stabbed at it before he changed his mind.

One ring and it went to a woman’s robotic voice telling him to leave a message.

“Hi, Jacob, it’s me. I just…I guess I wanted to hear your voice. I’m about to meet Rebecca for dinner, but, well, I can’t stop thinking about how we ended it the other day. I hope you aren’t out drinking at that bar again. I wish…I guess I don’t really know what I wish and I’m sort of rambling. I don’t know what I want. Catch you later.”

Great, he was certain he sounded as lame as he felt. The last thing he wanted to do was to put on a happy face and meet with Rebecca, but he guessed that was exactly what he was going to do. He got out of his car, locked it and went inside. She waited for him by the hostess desk and greeted him with a warm smile he hoped he returned. It felt extremely forced.

“I asked for a table in the corner if that’s all right with you,” she said after he’d kissed her cheek.

“Sure.”

They followed the hostess to a little romantic table for two in the back corner of the restaurant.
