Chapter Four

Alan didn’t know how long he’d been dozing in the tub when he became alert to the sound of the front door opening. His heart thundered. Why weren’t the dogs barking? Then again he couldn’t recall the dogs barking the whole time he’d been there.

He scrambled out of the tub and pulled on his pajama bottoms. He had to call 911. Breathlessly, he rushed into the bedroom to grab the phone when he remembered Kincaid had told him he didn’t have a landline anymore and Alan had left his cell phone in the living room. Great, he was about to be murdered.

Footsteps sounded in the front hall, and Alan, in a panic, looked around the bedroom for a weapon to use against the intruder. He rushed into the closet and spotted a tennis racket. A baseball bat would be better, but Alan guessed he didn’t have a choice so he gripped it hard and prepared to swing it.

Should he wait hiding in the closet or should he get pro-active and attack the guy before he had a chance to corner Alan? If only he knew karate or jiu jitsu or something. What if the guy had a gun?

Alan told himself it was entirely possible he was just a burglar who thought the house was empty. But then, what if it was one of Rick Crane’s buddies, looking for an easy score for drug money?

Shit.

Heart in his throat, Alan tiptoed out of the closet and headed for the bedroom door. Maybe he could run out the front while whoever was in the house searched the other rooms or something. He heard heavy breathing and his lungs seized.

Wait, it was more like panting. Doggy panting.

“Did you miss me?” A chuckle. “You did?”

Alan frowned. “Kincaid?”

“Yeah,” Kincaid called from the front hall. “Sorry, did I wake you?’

Kincaid appeared at the end of the hall. He was dressed in jeans and a sweater and held his suitcase in one hand. He gestured to the tennis racket in Alan’s hands. “Going to do something with that, slugger?”

Alan felt himself blush. He lowered the racket. “I thought you were someone breaking in.”

Kincaid smiled. “With a key?”

“I just heard the door open, didn’t know it was a key. Uh, what are you doing here? I mean, I know you live here. But weren’t you supposed to be in Milwaukee until Sunday?”

Kincaid set his suitcase down and walked down the hall until he stood directly in front of Alan. He was still smiling and looked so fucking sexy Alan could hardly stand it.

“The conference ended early so I changed my flight and came home.”

He frowned. “You didn’t call me to change it.”

“I’m capable of changing a flight, Alan. Anyway, I gave you the day off, remember?”

Alan studied his boss carefully. There was something different there. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Kincaid was staring at him rather intently and it occurred to Alan he wore only pajama bottoms with his skinny chest exposed. He bit his lip.
