Chapter 9

“MY SISTERS go to Lorrimer,” said Rafe. “Well, the youngest ones do.”

“Would they find Annabelle for us?” Van Kamp wanted to know.

“Yeah, they love doing weird things,” said Rafe. “Plus they like Fritz. I mean they don’t know Fritz, except that he’s a goth-emo who looks like Parker. But they like the idea of Fritz.”

“He is a romantic figure,” Van Kamp agreed. “Tragic and very annoying.”

We were all hanging out in Rafe’s and my dorm room—we couldn’t talk in Van Kamp’s in case Fritz walked in on us. Van Kamp sat with his legs crossed on Rafe’s bed, his computer balanced on his knees. Rafe was lying on his bed with his chin propped up on pillows, using his computer. I’m sure from the outside it looked like we were being extremely antisocial.

“What do you think, Parker?” Rafe asked. “You know them as well as I do, practically. Should we get them to investigate? Yeah, they’d do it, but do we really want them to?”

I knew what he meant. His sisters were eager but sometimes too eager. They’d embarrassed me to death one weekend when they insisted on introducing me to every gay guy they knew. And they were loud and unsubtle, and this was a situation that really did call for some subtlety. But it didn’t seem we had any other choice.

“I want this to end,” I said. “So yes, if this means we can get Fritz out of his depression, let’s do it.”

“You should e-mail them,” said Van Kamp. “I’ll send you some stuff about what they should look for. I know what times Annabelle is normally online. Your sisters will have to watch the computer labs. Or find out which girl is on her phone consistently at certain times of the day….” He paused. “Are you listening, Raffaello? Why are you looking at Parker like that?”

He was right—Rafe was looking at me strangely. I blinked at him.

“Is there something on my face?”

“No,” said Rafe. “It’s just nice you’re… being nice.”

“Fritz and I hung out for a bit the other day,” I said, shrugging. “I guess I kind of get him more.”

“They went out on a date,” said Van Kamp, without looking up. “Fritz told me.”

“No, we didn’t,” I said. “We went out as friends.”

“They cuddled.”

“We hugged.”

“They spooned.”

I stared at Van Kamp. “What has Fritz been saying?”

“Nothing. I’m messing with you,” said Van Kamp. “Fritz didn’t say anything to me. You’re easy to mess with.”

I punched Van Kamp lightly in the arm, and he snickered. He snapped his laptop closed and got up.

“I’ll see you losers tomorrow,” he said. “Remember to e-mail me, Rafe.”

“Sure.”

Van Kamp left. Rafe wriggled his eyebrows at me over his computer screen.

“He likes you,” he said.

“He thinks I’m an idiot,” I said.

Rafe shrugged. “My sisters reckon that guys who like them are always teasing them. Messing with them like he does with you.”

“You think Van Kamp’s interested in me?”

“Yeah. Probably.”

“He’s not gay. Is he?”

“He’s Dutch. I don’t know. I think they’re like… cooler about that kind of stuff over there.
