CHAPTER 14

David hummed to himself as he sat at his desk reviewing sales numbers. The numbers were good, as usual, but his cheerful mood had nothing to do with the business. In the three weeks since Sandra had agreed to give him another chance things had gone perfectly. Nice dates, telephone calls, and a few hot kisses that had him eagerly anticipating the day when things would progress to the bedroom, a place where the two of them always made sparks.

It was hard to walk away from her—literally and figuratively—after their dates. Not only was he hard as granite after kissing her goodbye, but he missed her company almost immediately. When he would think back on his relationship with Sandra, he often missed the sex, her smile, the softness of her skin. Now he realized how much he’d also missed her—her personality, the way she listened to him, challenged him. She was always smart, but now those smarts were channeled in a career-focused woman. Seeing her after work in her suits or skirts aroused him and brought up a sense of admiration. She’d already made strides in rebuilding trust in Business Connections. She’d impressed the president of the technical college, had brought on new partners, and hired new staff to help realize her vision.

All of that so she could move across country. He tried not to think about it. He wouldn’t let his old insecurities ruin things now. If she got the job offer, they’d find a way to make something work. He had her back; he wasn’t losing her again.

She wasn’t making it easy for him. Her emotions were always hidden. Though he knew the desire for him was there, he couldn’t tell if her heart was getting involved, a scary prospect when he wasn’t doing much to protect his.

His desk phone rang. A glance at the caller ID showed it was a colleague of his who worked for a local business brokerage firm. David normally invested in and purchased small businesses that were on sale as a way to grow his own personal wealth. He hadn’t bought anything recently, but that didn’t mean Jeff wouldn’t call with a prospect.

David hit the speakerphone button on his phone. “Jeff McNesby, what’s going on?”

“I was hoping you’d tell me,” Jeff said. Bewilderment and a hint of disappointment came through in his voice.

David sat forward in his chair. “What are you talking about?”

“One of my co-workers just popped into my office and mentioned a potential client he’d spoken with. Apparently Henderson Automotive is for sale and he’s excited about the commission he could possibly make. Of course I said he was full of shit because there’s no way my good friend David would consider selling his business and using someone else to handle the sale.”

David crumpled the sales report in his hand and flung it across the room. He snatched up the cordless phone and stomped around his desk to slam his door. The walls of his office seemed to close in around him.
