Chapter 15

Conor Melchers was having a stern talk with himself. What the devil had he been thinking to kiss Gus? She wasn’t in his usual way—she wasn’t in anyone’s usual way—and kissing her now had been considerably, startlingly, different from kissing her when they were both young.

Conor had definitely taken too much of the arrack punch. Why else would he have kissed Gus in the manner that he had? Not to mention the other things he’d done to her, all of which had felt damned fine. And not that he regretted an instant of that embrace, even while admitting he should not have done it, but he didn’t doubt Gus would be cursing him today, not only for the kiss, but for her overindulgence in the grape. Therefore, he was presenting himself at Lady Syb’s residence in Grosvenor Square, so that he might apologize, and Gus might box his ears, since he could not do it for himself.

She was in the drawing room, which on first glance appeared filled with flowers, the sweet scent of the blossoms heavy in the air. “Hello, Melchers,” said Nigel, who lounged in one of the oval-backed chairs. “You will think someone has died. Unfortunately, she ain’t.” He regarded his younger sister unappreciatively.

Nit’s lower lip quivered. Teardrops trembled in her eyes. “I am in disgrace, Mr. Melchers, which isn’t fair, because I didn’t mean to take a tumble, or if I did—and I don’t say that I did, mind you!—it was only because I wished Viscount Daventry to look at me.”

Gus was standing by the fireplace. She caught Conor’s glance, and her cheeks turned as pink as the pretty gown she wore. She did regret the kiss, he thought, then was surprised to realize he had hoped she would not.

Nit was looking at him expectantly. Ah, the viscount. “And did Duke look at you?” Conor asked.

“I suppose so.” Nit wrinkled her brow. “Certainly everyone else stared! I don’t know if you can imagine how it feels, sir, to know that you are an excellent horsewoman, and still fall off your mount.”

Not for the first time, Conor was grateful for his wicked reputation, which kept young ladies, for the most part, from making cakes of themselves on his behalf. “When did this, ah, mishap occur?”

“Today,” said Nigel. “In Hyde Park. As result of which, none of us will attend Lady Brock’s assembly, which for my part I consider a blessing, but Nit is inclined to sulk.”

“I am perfectly well enough to dance!” Nit squirmed. “Although I do have a dreadful bruise, but I mustn’t say where!”

Conor glanced at Gus, who refused to meet his eye. Whether Conor would go about his usual activities this evening remained unclear. He was uncertain how he felt about that circumstance.

Conor was uncertain about Gus altogether. Memory of their embrace haunted him, which was a most unusual thing. Possessed as he had been of a myriad of ladyloves, Conor could not recall that one had ever before invaded his dreams.
