Chapter Nine
~ Juliana ~
The soft shuffle of feet gliding across the carpet alerts me that heâs back in the room. The nerves that have been on edge since he stepped out calm. Cliff has been up for over an hour, trying to get ready for work. There was an emergency yesterday, and as much as he doesnât want to leave me, his patients need him. I told him as much last night, even as he fought me tooth and nail to stay.
So now, heâs trying his best to be quiet. His main goalâ¦not to wake me. Only Iâve been up for hours, restlessness taking over after having a nightmare. The events of the kidnapping pulled me awake in a heap of sweat. The visions were so vivid in my mind, I relived it in the flesh. I felt Chazâs breath on my face, his balmy palms on my skin. I fought so hard to get him off me, then I woke up screaming. It wasnât the first time, but last night was the worst. Fortunately, Cliff was there to hold me, just like every night since we started sharing a bed a few days ago. He rocked me gently, whispering comforting words until I stopped shaking.
It was while I faked sleep that I overheard him pray on my behalf. His pleas to God, asking for enough time for me to fall for him. He vowed to care for me and take care of whoever did this to me. It cracked every wall around my already fragile heart.
Little did he know, his actions have already started to win me over. The man is considerate, gentle, kind⦠The complete opposite of every man Iâve ever met. Then there are the other parts of him he tries so hard to hide but canât. A prime example is when we went out to the restaurant. He almost ripped the hostâs head to shreds. That level of possessiveness fills me with feelings Iâm unsure how to process. He's a jealous man, but it comes from his need to protect me.
His footsteps get closer, and I try to keep my breathing even. His proximity makes my body burn up, but I donât dare move.
âI know youâre awake, sweetheart. I want to say goodbye before I head out. If you need me for anything, donât hesitate to call.â He presses his lips against my forehead, giving me a small kiss.
I open my eyes, and Iâm greeted with that lazy, sexy smile Iâve come to crave. âSorry, Iâ¦â
âThereâs no need to explain. After the night you had, Iâm glad youâre finally calm. It tore me apart seeing you break down.â He pushes the loose strands of my hair behind my ear then places his palm against my cheek. âWhen youâre ready, Iâll be waiting to talk about it.â
Thereâs so much adoration in his eyes, it makes me feel guilty. I shouldnât be taking advantage of him. He thinks heâs helping a woman who canât remember. Instead, heâs dealing with me.
