Henry burst out laughing. ‘I don’t care how many times you bash me over the head, that is officially amazing.’ He picked up his camera. ‘Do that again.’

Jenna obliged and grinned as Henry took several pictures.

‘Definitely one for the album,’ he said after reviewing the photo on the small screen. ‘I’ll call it Sunrise at Northlands Abbey plus Jenna’s chest. Does that meet with your approval?’

‘Plus the photobomber.’

A small furrow creased Henry’s forehead. ‘What photobomber?’

‘The dog-walking woman wandering around earlier. She was over there.’ Jenna pointed.

‘I didn’t see anyone. Or a dog.’

‘I didn’t see a dog either,’ admitted Jenna. ‘I just assumed she was looking for one.’

‘What did this woman look like?’

Jenna did her best to describe her but really, it had been rather difficult with the sun in her eyes to see anything that clearly.

Henry picked up one of the croissants, tore the corner off and chewed thoughtfully for a few seconds. ‘I suppose it could have been the mysterious Grey Lady.’

‘Seriously? Have you ever thought about writing fiction?’

‘It’s true!’ Henry protested. ‘Well, the legend exists anyway. Look it up in the library if you don’t believe me, you philistine.’

Jenna helped herself to an almond croissant. ‘Go on then – who is the Grey Lady?’

‘According to the legend, she’s the lover of one of the monks.’

‘But surely they weren’t allowed to have sexual relationships?’

‘They weren’t. But they fell deeply in love and met in secret, down by the river. Then one day he just stopped coming. She never knew that he’d been sent away to another monastery on the orders of the abbot. It is said that the woman died of grief, although it’s more likely that it was one of the common diseases around in medieval times. But even in death she wouldn’t abandon her lover and – if you believe the legend – she returned, again and again, searching for him, and it’s said that she’s still looking.’ Henry paused. ‘Of course it could also just have been your mystery dog-walker.’

‘But you didn’t see her, did you?’

‘No, I didn’t,’ Henry admitted.

It was probably the effects of the alcohol, but Jenna felt unexpectedly touched by the story. ‘Isn’t it sad to think that she never knew why her lover had abandoned her? To be left always hoping that one day he would come back.’ She poured the last of the champagne into the two glasses, quietly marvelling that they had finished the entire bottle, and picked up her glass. ‘To her lost love,’ she said, raising her glass.

‘To all lost loves,’ he replied as he clinked his glass against hers. Just briefly, his eyes seemed to cloud over with a look of wistfulness, but before Jenna could ask anything he posed a question of his own.

‘So is Matt your lost love?’

Jenna almost choked on her champagne. ‘God, no!’

‘So you don’t regret breaking up with him? I’d feel very guilty if it had anything to do with me.’

Jenna shook her head. She’d been thinking a lot about that relationship over the last few days.
