CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

EDDIE

‘I need to make a phone call. Sorry.’ Emma excuses herself and heads towards the beach with her phone pressed firmly to her ear.

‘Is everything okay?’ I ask the second she returns.

‘It will be. Sometimes you have to play dirty when it comes to getting things you want. Especially in business.’ She shrugs and hops on to the back saddle.

We return the bike to the owner. Bob, David and Petar welcome us back onto the boat. Emma checks her phone once more before throwing it back into her bag and sighing deeply.

‘Thank you for lunch, by the way. I didn’t mean to just rush off.’

‘No problem. Shall I book somewhere in the old town for dinner tonight?’

She bites her lower lip to halt the grin erupting on her face. ‘I thought we’re having a BBQ on the boat? Remember? We’ll go out for cocktails with the others instead. We really should spend some time with our friends, you know. I’ve barely seen the girls since we got here.’

She doesn’t sound too upset about it, but she’s right. The rugby team’s WhatsApp group is hopping. Marcus has photoshopped a picture of my face onto a missing ad on a milk bottle and shared it. Fucker. Was it only last night that we were in the makeshift casino? It feels like a lifetime ago.

David struts around the boat, offering everyone fruity orange cocktails, Tequila Sunrises he calls them. Only this morning, I swore I was never drinking again, yet here I am. Coach will kill me if I fuck up this weekend’s match.

Petar begins his talk on our final destination, Sipan, which we can see looming on the horizon. Emma has resumed her position, her shoulders tucked firmly underneath my arm, like they were made to fit there. I draw circles on her exposed shoulder blades and watch as goosebumps ripple her skin.

‘If I tip David, does that count as buying you a cocktail? We can tick off date three as done?’

She throws her head back in amusement. ‘Someone’s keen.’ Her grin exposes ivory, symmetrical teeth.

‘Three dates, you said?’ My question earns me a swift dig in the ribs. For a split second, I wonder what will happen when we get home, back to Dublin. Will we continue our easy banter? Or is she one of these super busy career women that’s more devoted to her business than any lover?

Wow. Lover? Jesus, one fabulous night almost a year ago hardly still counts as a lover. I’m getting ahead of myself here, though a man can hope, right?

The red-haired guy and his partner eventually approach, each holding one of David’s cocktails.

‘Hi.’ I scoot up along the bench to make room for them.

‘It’s fabulous, isn’t it?’ Emma says to the woman, gesturing to the landscape.

‘It sure is. We’re a long way from home.’ The woman’s accent projects a distinct musical lilt associated with Donegal.

‘Are you..?’ The guy tilts his head curiously at me. I can tell it’s been killing him all day.

‘Eddie Harrington. Pleased to meet you.
