“I hate to fly. You know that? I mean, I really hate to fly.”

The words were all but drowned out by the loud whirring of the helicopter, but Cat knew what Felicia was saying. Her sister had uttered the phrases so many times since fastening her seat belt, they’d become for her a kind of rosary. Now her face contorted with worry, Fee opened her pocketbook and began flipping through page after page filled with wallet-sized photographs of her children.

Cat leaned over and spoke loudly over the noise, “Fee, you must try to relax. You’ll see the kids again, I promise.” Catherine willed herself to be tolerant. She knew Felicia was going through a lot these days. Robert was harsh and demanding, and the children were more than a handful. As a teenager, Fee had been strong of character and filled with positive self-esteem. Since her wedding, however, her confidence in herself seemed to have been slowly but seriously drained away.

Fee looked up at her, glanced past her at the blue sky and ocean outside, blanched, then quickly looked down again at her photos. Despite her impatience, Cat’s heart filled with compassion. Felicia didn’t talk much about her personal struggles, even to her older sister. This troubled, yet at the same time relieved, Cat. When it got right down to it, she didn’t know how to advise Felicia. Cat believed in the sanctity of marriage and couldn’t urge her sister to leave the husband who treated her so poorly. At the same time, she could not help wishing Felicia’s life could be different.

“I don’t see why we had to come,” Lucy shouted from the seat behind them.

“Fee, honey,” Cat repeated, ignoring Lucy, “we’re absolutely fine. The helicopter will be landing in less than ten minutes. Take a deep breath and just think about how great it’s going to be in Catalina. Remember how much you used to enjoy it as a little girl.”

Felicia breathed deeply as she was instructed, while Lucy leaned closer and said disapprovingly. “Don’t make this sound like a vacation when it’s not. You know the minute we touch down, you’re going to be off and running to this B & B of yours.”

“So?” Cat shouted back, “What’s the problem? That’s what we’re here for.”

“The problem is, it’s not very honest of you to pretend this is a pleasure trip.”

Catherine ignored the verbal jab and focused on patting Felicia’s sleeve. Lucy had been prickly ever since Cat stopped by to pick her up that morning. Catherine guessed she felt guilty about revealing what little she knew about Daphne’s elopement. Whereas Lucy had, at the end of their last conversation, sounded relieved to know that Cat was going in search of their youngest sister, today she seemed to have reverted to her original position: that they should leave Daphne alone and let her make her own decisions.

“I’m not a child, you know,” Felicia said, clearly trying to put on a brave face. “I’m just a little scared, that’s all.
