I sat on my couch, nervously awaiting Sheldon’s arrival. I’d messaged him, letting him know that I was home. He immediately called to see if he could come over. Crossing my legs, I did my best to remain calm. Watching my wine swirl around my glass as I nervously rotated it, I couldn’t help but wonder where today’s visit would lead. Neither of us were in the frame of mind we were in before Jamel’s accident.

I hoped that he was coming to talk about what happened between us and what thoughts led to his radio silence. One would think that after nearly twenty-five years, he would have moved on by now. It wasn’t like she was popping in and out of his life like Dexter was doing to me. This couldn’t be healthy. He was still feeling guilty about being with me as if he were cheating on his wife.

Standing from the couch, I made my way to the kitchen, gulping the wine while en route. That wine wasn’t helping a thing. I took a bottle of cognac from the cabinet and poured myself a little then started my smooth jazz playlist on my phone. After taking a sip, I stared at the glass while it went down, then ended up gulping it like I’d done the wine and nearly choked myself to death. I was not about that life. Who am I trying to fool?

I went to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water to calm my throat down. As soon as I put the top back on the bottle, the doorbell rang. I was so nervous jitters had taken control of my body. Once I checked the peephole and saw just how fine Sheldon looked in his sweats and t-shirt, I took a deep breath and thought, Here goes nothing. Grabbing the doorknob, I turned it slowly, silently questioning if I was doing the right thing by allowing him a chance to ghost me all over again.

Giving in to my heart, I pulled the door open and stepped aside as I said, “Hey. Come in.”

He gave me a tight-lipped smile then walked in and waited for me to close the door. When I turned around, he grabbed me by the hand and led me to my couch. “Would you like a drink before I have a seat?”

“No. I think I’ve had enough to drink today.”

I smiled then sat next to him. I angled my body slightly as I leaned against the cushions. He seemed a little nervous, so I decided to steer the conversation in a different direction. “Which son was that with you today?”

He smiled and seemed to relax instantly. “That was Dylan. He’s the baby boy.”

“He looks the most like you.”

“Yeah. He’s more like the old me than I even knew. He’s only a year older than my daughter.”

“How’s he like you?”

“He’s resilient. No matter what’s thrown his way, he conquers it. He’s been reminding me of how much I liked the old me. This new me is miserable.
