Chapter 29

What happened next…

“You shot him. Why did you shoot him?” the youngest of the officers yelled.

His face was beet red as he stood over me with his chest heaving from the anxiety of witnessing what had just happened.

I grit my teeth while clutching my shoulder, wanting nothing more than to return the favor and shoot every one of these muthafuckers. I should have, but I couldn’t risk that. I wouldn’t risk that.

“Don’t be stupid, son. I shot him because he fired at me, right?”

“But, he…”

“You lying son of a bitch. He did not even get to his gun. His hands were out to the sides. You just shot him, and you will regret that. Trust me. I will make sure of it.

“Tayah, shut the hell up. Sofia, take her with you,” I demanded from where I was kneeled down clutching my shoulder. It hurt like hell, but unless these stupid muthafuckers pulled some foul shit, then I would live. I didn’t want or need Tayah defending me right now. It would only put her on their list.

These cops had a brotherhood. I knew that shit, and if she threatened to unravel the lie that I knew they were about to tell to cover this detective’s ass, then she would be on their list. She wouldn’t understand it, nor would she care. I was sure of that from the rage in her eyes and the anger and fear that danced around her. She was ready for blood with every one of them, and that wasn’t a good thing.

“Come.” Sofia’s voice was calm regardless of her tear-drenched face. She wrapped her small, pudgy hand around Tayah’s arm, but Tayah snatched away.

“No, they’re…”

“Tay, go with Sofia. Please, baby. Just go. I’m good. I promise.”

Our eyes met, and she sucked in a deep breath before I offered her a reassuring nod while attempting to keep my face neutral. I was ready to fuck shit up, but I didn’t need her to take on my energy. I needed her to leave before she made things worse for both of us.

“What the hell happened here?” a tall, thin brown-skinned woman questioned as she stood at the top of the stairs surveying the scene below her.

My eyes stayed on Tayah, and I gave her one last warning look before she broke down and followed Sofia out of the room.

I slowly stood to my feet. Blood seeped from my shoulder, running down my arm and hitting the wooden floors next to me.

“We had to contain the suspect. Come patch him up so we can get him out of here.”

“Nah, fuck that. I need to see my mother first.”

My eyes landed on the paramedic, and I could see the confusion in her eyes. I wanted her to tell me what I already knew. I needed to hear her say it. My mother was gone.

The detective chuckled and glanced up at the paramedic who was now on her way down the stairs. He was trying to warn her not to say anything about my mother or the situation.
