Chapter Thirteen

Chris watched Gina’s eyes pop open as if it were Christmas when he brought her to the chocolate shop. As soon as they opened the door, he could smell chocolate in the air. He’d found the spot by accident in Queens and thought it would be a great place to take her.

He’d come by the day before to see if he needed an appointment. When they told him he could walk in, he was sure that after the seminar he could start to woo Gina from friend to fiancée here. Then the whole debacle with Clara happened, and he couldn’t even think straight when he saw her with Tim. Even he had to take a second thought. Was he really jealous of Tim? That was just a wake-up call that what he was feeling wasn’t going to go away.

“Would you look at that?” Gina said pointing toward the ceiling” “I think the pipes are filled with chocolate! And look, they have three chocolate waterfalls on that table.”

Chris followed behind her and watched her go from chocolate fountains to display cases full of different chocolate cubes. When she had finished taking it in, he tapped her on the shoulder.

“The chocolate isn't going anywhere, let’s have a seat and you can have them bring chocolate to the table.”

“Are we here too early for food,” she asked. They sat down in a red U-shaped love seat. It left no room for personal space and for a moment, Chris thought Gina would protest, but she settled down and waited in anticipation.

“No, we are the first ones here, but they’re open. If they weren’t, I’d have them open it for you,” he said as she pulled the chocolate squares that were set as freebies on the table toward her.

Gina smiled. “Well, it seems that you want me in a good mood.”

“I always want you in a good mood, but it’s true, I thought this place would fix a couple of things at one time.”

“Well, let me commend you on your attentiveness to know I like chocolate, but I wouldn’t have let you open it just for me. If it had been closed, we would have had to go back to the seminar.”

“Gina, it’s a store. I’ve got the kind of money that makes store owners love to open for me. It increases their bottom line for the next seven days, at least.”

Gina popped the last square on the table in her mouth and then sat up. Chris could see her mentally and physically getting herself together to fight. He didn’t think she’d be so skittish. In fact, he had been hoping the ”Chocolate Spot” would have soothed her.

“This is a bit much for friends,” she said.

“Chocolate?”

Gina sighed. “You know what I mean.” She opened her arms and gestured to the surrounding place. “All of this.”

“Ah, yes, well in the vein of honest friends, I’m working on something a little more than friends.”

“We just had a fight. Don’t you think you’re moving a bit fast?”

“We didn’t fight.
