Trey - Ch 15
July 7, 12:00pm
“Alright, ladies,” Zaina says to a crowd of preteen girls from the pitching mound at Thomas Jefferson Park. I do a few practice swings to warm up. “You know how people try to insult you and say that you throw like a girl?”
“Yeah!” a few of them shout.
“Well, they’ve never seen a girl throw like this. You ready, Trey?” she asks.
“Try me,” I tell her, a little nervous after seeing her practice while I was teaching batting skills at Harlem Homebase in the morning drills. I’d never actually been to any of the St. Ignatius girl’s softball games since they were normally played opposite our baseball games.
The underhanded pitch comes quickly and unexpectedly. The team cheers at the fastball, impressed by the speed, just like I am. Always trained to keep my eye on the ball, I’m still able to hit it, but a girl in the outfield catches the pop-up easily, yelling, “OUT!”
“Wow, that was powerful,” I tell my girlfriend.
“Thanks,” she says, twirling her braid. “So, ladies, that’s what I’ll teach you after lunch! See you in an hour and a half!”
“Great job this morning, team! I’ll see you for a bit this afternoon!”
Hand in hand, we walk a few blocks to Piatto d’Oro, an Italian restaurant I’d passed on the way home yesterday. Today is the only day Zaina’s volunteering with me, and the only day I would see her all week since I’m grounded, so I wanted to be able to take her somewhere a little private to eat.
“How have you been?” she asks me.
“Fine,” I answer. “Bored.”
“I can’t believe they took away your phone, too.”
“They’re pretty pissed.”
“Mine would be, too,” she tells me.
“What have you done this week?”
“I went with Brinlee a few days to search for Callen.”
I look at her curiously.
“His parents are looking for any clue, Trey.”
“Even though Max went to the police and said that he ran off? That he was angry and just took off running?”
“The police talked to the McNares about that, but they don't think a fight over a girl is enough to make him run away.”
After getting to the restaurant, we wait to be seated to continue the conversation. In my dirty baseball uniform, I feel a little out of place, but the host and waitress are friendly and don’t seem to mind.
Zaina sighs. “If they knew the truth… if they knew what Max and Callen were really doing, and if they knew Callen’s frame of mind that night, then I think they’d begin to see that he probably did run away. Without that knowledge, though, they can’t begin to see the truth.”
“And if they knew the truth, they may not even care to find him anymore,” I say.
“Do you really think that’s true?” she asks.
I nod enthusiastically. “His mother called my parents when they saw the picture of Max and me on those sites, Zai. She was very concerned. She kept saying something like she couldn’t imagine Callen’s state of mind if he found out his two best friends were gay.
