CHAPTER TWELVE

Her father had died alone, and it broke her heart to think of it. Looking at Adam now, she knew one thing... God, I don’t want to die alone.

In the meantime, she didn’t want to live alone, either. And the worst of it? There could be no remedy for that kind of loneliness—she could never be with the one man she’d ever wanted. She’d been hurt, devastated by the two men in her life she’d loved—her father and Adam. Being alone was safer. It would protect her from ever getting hurt that way again. Maybe in the end, the loneliness would make her numb to the pain of it. That’s what her father had done. He’d thrown himself into his work. She didn’t like the sound of that—that she could be weak like her father, ignore the possibility of love and relationships around her to avoid the hurt. But she didn’t know what else to do.

Except she had to find out what happened to him, before it happened to her.

When Adam ran a finger down her cheek, she realized she’d been caught up and stepped away. “I’m going there, Adam. To the shipwreck.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because it was the last place he worked. Plus, the island where we found his body isn’t that far from the shipwreck.” Over the last century there’d been several salvage attempts, so she’d found plenty of information on the internet. “Don’t you think there could be a connection?”

“Then let’s tell the police. Tell Ray. Let them work it out.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll talk to Chief Winters. Send him an email about today. In case something happens, I don’t want any information, any clues or details, to be lost.”

Adam frowned. “Nothing is going to happen to you, Cobie. I won’t let it. The next place you go, I’m going with you. But don’t you think it’s best to just let him do his job? Let him figure this out?”

“My father’s death isn’t his priority. Isn’t even his jurisdiction. And while my safety might be a high priority, the two are tied together. I want to be proactive, not just sit around and wait for the next attempt on my life.”

“Your father’s death is Ray’s priority, along with the state police—that is, if the ME finds that his death was suspicious aside from how we found him. Why don’t you email Ray about this shipwreck information, too?”

“Okay. Sure. And then what? I guess you just want me to sit around and wait for someone to try to kill me again.”

Adam looked hurt. He started clearing the dishes. She realized he had no intention of leaving for a while yet. So much for a quiet evening at home—her first in several nights—to think things through and tackle the mess on her hands. She glanced at the clock on the wall. When was Dana’s husband supposed to get there? He installed security systems, and, given her current predicament, he had insisted on coming out this evening to install a top-of-the-line system for her.
