CHAPTER TWELVE
Her father had died alone, and it broke her heart to think of it. Looking at Adam now, she knew one thing... God, I donât want to die alone.
In the meantime, she didnât want to live alone, either. And the worst of it? There could be no remedy for that kind of lonelinessâshe could never be with the one man sheâd ever wanted. Sheâd been hurt, devastated by the two men in her life sheâd lovedâher father and Adam. Being alone was safer. It would protect her from ever getting hurt that way again. Maybe in the end, the loneliness would make her numb to the pain of it. Thatâs what her father had done. Heâd thrown himself into his work. She didnât like the sound of thatâthat she could be weak like her father, ignore the possibility of love and relationships around her to avoid the hurt. But she didnât know what else to do.
Except she had to find out what happened to him, before it happened to her.
When Adam ran a finger down her cheek, she realized sheâd been caught up and stepped away. âIâm going there, Adam. To the shipwreck.â
âWhy would you do that?â
âBecause it was the last place he worked. Plus, the island where we found his body isnât that far from the shipwreck.â Over the last century thereâd been several salvage attempts, so sheâd found plenty of information on the internet. âDonât you think there could be a connection?â
âThen letâs tell the police. Tell Ray. Let them work it out.â
âDonât worry. Iâll talk to Chief Winters. Send him an email about today. In case something happens, I donât want any information, any clues or details, to be lost.â
Adam frowned. âNothing is going to happen to you, Cobie. I wonât let it. The next place you go, Iâm going with you. But donât you think itâs best to just let him do his job? Let him figure this out?â
âMy fatherâs death isnât his priority. Isnât even his jurisdiction. And while my safety might be a high priority, the two are tied together. I want to be proactive, not just sit around and wait for the next attempt on my life.â
âYour fatherâs death is Rayâs priority, along with the state policeâthat is, if the ME finds that his death was suspicious aside from how we found him. Why donât you email Ray about this shipwreck information, too?â
âOkay. Sure. And then what? I guess you just want me to sit around and wait for someone to try to kill me again.â
Adam looked hurt. He started clearing the dishes. She realized he had no intention of leaving for a while yet. So much for a quiet evening at homeâher first in several nightsâto think things through and tackle the mess on her hands. She glanced at the clock on the wall. When was Danaâs husband supposed to get there? He installed security systems, and, given her current predicament, he had insisted on coming out this evening to install a top-of-the-line system for her.
