Twenty

Allie had always thought she was an extrovert, always wanting to be around someone else until exhaustion sent her to bed, but after a few days with Ben, she realized she had gotten things wrong. She was outgoing, not extroverted, and all of her boyfriends had always been the reason she ended each day so tired that she fell asleep instantly. As it turned out, Allie was an introvert, and that explained why she’d had so much energy over the last few months of being single.

She had credited it to her higher intake of ice cream and the sugars that came with it, but she’d realized the inaccuracy of that assessment when she went the whole weekend without ice cream but still had plenty of energy.

Ben—wonderful Ben—didn’t drain her like everyone else did. Being around him simply made her happy, and she’d never been so determined to be around a person before. She didn’t find excuses to have a night to herself, which by itself was a strange sensation, and every time he showed up at her apartment after she finished her workday, the day got so much brighter.

The best part, though, was when she told herself she had to sit down and write those chapters for Simmons. Any of her past boyfriends, even the nicer ones, would have guilt-tripped her into giving them the attention they “deserved” and told her she should have done that while she was at work or after they left for the night.

But Ben? Wednesday night, Ben brought over a smorgasbord of snacks so she could figure out what her favorites were, and then he grabbed her laptop and favorite blanket for her and settled next to her on the tiny couch with a book.

“If I’m distracting you at all,” he told her, “send me home. I’m sick of staring at my own walls, but I can go to a park or something if you need the space.”

And while he had definitely been distracting, Allie had refused to send him away. She liked having him around because he made everything so easy. Maybe they hadn’t known each other long, but Ben had definitely become her best friend.

Allie had never had a best friend before—not since Jake, at least—and she absolutely loved it. It was something she could get used to.

When Halloween rolled around on Thursday, Allie was just finishing up the last chapter to send to Simmons when Ben knocked on the door. She hopped up, way more excited to be going trick-or-treating than she’d expected, and had a full-blown grin on her face when she pulled open the door.

“Hey—Jake?”

Jake raised an eyebrow, and his smile as he glanced into the empty apartment behind her made it clear he’d been hoping to find her alone. “Hey,” he said, sliding his hands into his pockets as if nervous. Once upon a time, Allie had loved that little gesture, but now she thought it looked far too contrived to be a true indication of shyness. If he was showing up here uninvited, Jake definitely wasn’t shy.
