I never heard back from Joe last night. I was feeling disappointed. As much as I had tried not to, I had got my hopes up. I rolled over, checked the clock. My sleeping patterns were still all over the show. I had to get myself some routine again. I also needed a good declutter. My mind, and my house. No better way to clear your head than to clear your surroundings, I thought to myself. I also needed a good distraction.

It was a beautiful day, and a good dose of fresh air and sunshine would help clear my head. I slipped on my flip flops and headed out the door.

Josie Baker, my elderly neighbour, was out pottering around in her front garden. She gave me a wave as I walked down my driveway. I had been fairly unsociable since Christopher had left, and Josie had always been the kind of neighbour who had a sense of her surroundings. Some may say nosy, but I liked to think of her as observant.

She had been over to check on me a couple of times after Christopher had left. I had felt bad I hadn’t been more accommodating to her on these visits, but I had been a wreck and I was not great company. I was ashamed to say my grieving process really was quite ridiculous.

It had been nice to know she had been looking out for me though. She was such a kind gentle soul and a very wise woman to talk to. Looking back, she would most likely have inspired this new me a lot sooner had I only let her in.

I gave Josie a wave back as I crossed the street toward her. ‘Hi Josie,’ I called out.

‘Oh Emily.’ A wide smile crossed her face and she raised herself to her feet. With outstretched arms, I went in for a hug. She really was like my New York Mom.

‘Emily, I almost didn’t recognise you. I thought I must have gotten a new neighbour,’ she joked.

‘I know, I’m a terrible person. I’m sorry I’ve been such a stranger.’

‘Nonsense young lady, we all have our own ways of dealing with these joys life brings our way. Would you like a cup of tea, my dear?’

‘I’d love a cold lemonade if you have any?’

Josie made the best homemade lemonade I’d ever had. Despite the fact it was loaded with enough sugar to send me straight to the dentist, I couldn’t resist it.

‘Grandkids stripped my lemon tree dry this weekend,’ she laughed, shaking her head.

‘A cup of tea is the next best thing then.’

‘Wonderful, let’s go inside. I’ve been missing your company you know,’ she added as we walked towards the house.

I smiled back, trying to hide my guilt. ‘Me too.’

Just as we approached the front steps, Josie spun around suddenly. It was fast enough to startle me and I found myself jumping backward a little.

‘Don’t you let that man back in.’ Her finger pointed at me with her gardening gloves clutched tightly.
