I want to focus, but those lips… It is hard to resist those lips and those eyes that are looking into mine seeing me in a way I have forgotten is possible. I hope she likes what she sees. A man, trying like hell to be a good father, a provider, and a doctor that can still save people even if I couldn’t save my wife. A son-in-law. A brother-in-law. Everything but a partner, best friend and lover. I haven’t had the chance to be those in a long time. When I was, first to Elizabeth, and then to Lynn, I’d been the best man I could be.

She cocks her head slightly but answers with no hesitation, “Of course, Sean. What do you need?”

She is a good woman. I point to the pile of crumpled wrapping paper on the desk. “I’ll put in my time alongside, but I just don’t think the girls are going to buy that Santa’s elves don’t know how to wrap a present for shit.”

The look on her face, lips pressed together to avoid a smile, says that she agrees with me.

“I’ve got your back,” she says, beaming with pride.
