The village of Halewood in about 1910. To the right is the original Derby A rms, which stood on the site of the present hotel of that name. (Knowsley Libraries).
The well-known Fleetwood-Hesketh family eventually took possession of the Hale estates before the last war. Mr. Peter Fleetwood-Hesketh came to live at the Manor House (once known as the Parsonage House and overlooking the village green). Although not as grand a building as the then decaying Hale Hall had been, the Manor House is a brick and sandstone building with an impressive frontage and part of it is 17th Century. It was added to considerably by the Rev. William Langford in the early 18th Century. The building later became a farmhouse (Manor Farm) and the military occupied it for some time during the last war. Today, bereft of the ancient ivy which once veiled its handsome face, it presents a fitting residence for the "squire."
Hale Hutte, or the Haute, or the Old Hutt as it was latterly called, was a moated manor house on the site where Ford's factory now stands. It has been demolished only since the last war. The Yerlands, or Irelands, as they became known by, occupied the Hutte from about 1291. The Lords of Hale had many privileges. They could demand anchorage-money from the owners of ships sheltering on their coast; claim ownership of all "royal fish" (like sturgeon), and "wrecks and waifs of the sea within these waters."
