Chapter 18

Richard decided that he would check in on his cousin before going to bed. It was after midnight, and, knowing the following two days would put a strain on everyone in the house, he wished to retire. Opening the door quietly, as to not disturb Darcy if he were asleep, Richard found the sight before him to be interesting.

On the bed was Darcy, peacefully asleep, wearing a smile of pure joy, his left hand reached slightly to hold the hand of the sleeping form of Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Richard was pleased to see the two were finding comfort in each other. He closed the door and went to his room to find some sleep.

In the morning, Elizabeth found that her father had sent Lettie to assist her and a message saying that he was feeling better and would come to Netherfield later in the day to pay his respects as well as speak with Darcy. With Lettie’s help, she dressed in the black gown that Beatrice had made, and went to check on her sister.

Jane was awake and dressed in black as well. “I am not certain about what to say to people who come today. It is such a sad affair, and we cannot tell people all that happened. What will we say though? Especially since Charles and Mr Hurst will not be with us.”

“We will say that Miss Bingley was ill and that the ladies suffered an accident which claimed their lives. We will also say that Mr Bingley is distraught over the loss and is unavailable. Mr Hurst as well.”

“I feel deceitful saying that it was an accident, but the truth should not be spread throughout the neighborhood.”

“Papa will be coming by today to convey his sympathies. Colonel Fitzwilliam will be with us, representing William’s family.”

Jane’s eyes widened. “William? Am I to wish you joy?”

A smile graced Elizabeth’s face. “He has not yet spoken with Papa, but he has asked for my hand and I have accepted. Oh, Jane, to think that such a man could love me as I love him. I am so very happy knowing that he will be my husband.”

Seeing her sister so happy, Jane could not but feel a twinge of jealousy. Her future was uncertain now, due to Caroline Bingley and Louisa Hurst. “I wish I could be as happy as you are, Lizzy. I am afraid for Charles. What if he never recovers from this wretched affair?”

“If you truly love him, you will keep him safe and tend to his needs. You are not married as yet, but he will need your love and support to find his way back from his despair. Now, shall we visit him first before going downstairs?”

Jane nodded her head and the two ladies entered Bingley’s bedchambers. Bingley’s eyes were open and he was sitting up, but he was not reacting to anything around him, just his gentle rocking back and forth while staring straight ahead. Elizabeth went to sit on the chair that was beside the bed.
