Chapter Twelve

Petrina watched the process as Officer Anastos booked the American gold smuggler into jail, with the minimal charges of diverting stolen goods. She’d have to wait until the government’s prosecuting attorney learned of the situation to question him further on his role in the case, if he was also the thief, or just a mule transporting the stolen gold elsewhere. As he was getting his mug shot taken, Petrina got a few pictures of him on her phone to show to Mrs. Kaplan.

With pictures of the suspect and of the stolen jewelry, Petrina went out to her scooter. She was looking forward to showing Kaplan the images, if only to prove to the woman that Rhodes really did have a functioning police department that cared about the Turks on the island.

Before she could turn the key in the ignition, her phone rang with a call from the dispatch center.

“Sergeant Pappas, a dead body has been found.”

“Where?”

“In the moat.”

“Why am I getting the call? Just because someone is found dead near Old Town doesn’t mean it comes to me.”

“It does this time. Investigators Andris and Diakos are both busy. In fact, Andris said to call you directly.”

“He would. Have uniformed officers been sent?”

“Everyone is busy. It’s been a busy day in Rhodes.”

Petrina started her engine and shouted into her phone over the noise of her scooter as she rode off. “There’s no police presence at the scene at all?”

“No one. I have an ambulance on the way, but they’re not sure of how to get down into the moat from the street level. People generally don’t die in there, at least not in the last five hundred years since Suleiman the Magnificent brought his cannon and guns to...”

“Wipe out the Knights of Saint John to end the Crusades. Yeah, I get it. I don’t know how to get in there, either. What gate is the body near?”

“That’s the other problem. The report is coming from German speaking visitors, and they’re not sure where they are, just in the moat somewhere.”

“Do you still have them on the line? Get their number so I can call them back.”

“They hung up. They had a flight to catch at the airport and left the scene.”

“Skata!”

Petrina looked at her map for a moment and found the place she had marked as a viable entrance to the deep but broad moat that surrounded the old city walls. Her plan was to enter the dry moat and keep riding until she found someone that looked dead.

She turned on her flashing blue lights and siren and aimed for the moat entrance near St. Peter’s Tower. It was closest to where she was, and near one end of the moat walk.

The moat around the old city was dry, and always had been. The protective stone walls were immense and vertical, built hundreds of years ago by the Knights of St. John to keep the Turks out. Opposite of those walls was a vertical escarpment, also built of stone. Invaders
