CHAPTER 32

DESAI

“Thank you.” Shy offered a weak smile as I handed over something for her to sleep in and pointed to the guest room where she could stay for the night.

When she refused to go home, Cage wanted her at his place, but she didn’t trust Crane not to show up, being that it was his brother’s house, so she refused. I offered mine when she suggested a hotel.

Cage encouraged her to stay with me after he was sure that I didn’t mind, and she agreed because she didn’t want to be alone. Now, here we were. I felt like shit after I left my guest room and closed the door behind me. I was connected to her pain. Not the source of it, but Smith was my best friend, so I felt like I somehow had a hand in it, when I really didn’t. It was hard not to, though. Fucking Smith.

When I reached my living room, Cage’s long body was positioned on my sofa, head back, hands resting in his lap, and long legs bent at the knees sitting high in front of him. I stopped at the entrance and just watched him. He was so beautiful to me. Yes, beautiful. That’s just how well put together he was. Cage was like art. His body, his face, the way he smelled, the way he made me feel; it was all just perfection in the most flawed way.

“Come sit, we need to talk.” His voice was heavy and exuded exhaustion, but when he lifted his head, I could see confirmation of that in his eyes. The muscles around them were tense, and it extended down the length of his face to his strong jaw.

“It’s late. Are you staying?”

“Nah, I can’t. I need to go deal with Crane. His head is all fucked up right now, and I’m not sure what he might do.”

“About the shooting or about Shy?” It came out without thought. I was angry for her and scared for myself. Tonight was… a lot.

“Both. Come sit with me for a minute.”

I moved to him slowly, and when I was standing between his legs, he just watched me for a minute before his eyes moved from my face to my lower body. It wasn’t sexual in any way, more of a concerned look than anything.

When he leaned forward and gripped my legs, tugging me closer and onto his lap, I anchored my body across his, hiking my dress up enough to give me clearance to do so. My panties were exposed, but sex was the furthest thing from my mind, even with the firmness positioned beneath me.

“You good?” Cage’s large hands moved up my arms to my neck and then back down again, settling at my waist.

“Physically, yes, but tonight, everything that happened, it was a bit much. I’m just… I don’t know how or what I am.”

“Still with me, I hope.” His eyes were pleading, and his thick chords were low, like he was not sure of my answer.
