15 ORIOLE

“Left or right?” I asked.

“Right at the light, then left on the side street.”

“What did you say the name of this place was, again?”

“The Badger’s Paws. You’ll like it, I promise.”

I shrugged, but spun the wheel the way Cedric directed me to. According to him, the trivia night at this place was the most fun thing that happened in Newbank on a weekly basis. The bar had only opened after I left town. When I lived here, there were definitely no trivia nights around.

“Okay,” I said, pulling the car into a parking spot. “You sure you don’t want to just go back to your place?”

“Don’t tempt me,” Cedric said.

Ever since we’d started fooling around, it was hard to keep our hands off each other. I still couldn’t believe how amazing in bed he was, considering his lack of experience with men. He seemed to enjoy what I did to him, too. He’d definitely been in the closet without realizing it.

But we could only spend so long in bed before both of us wanted to do something else. And in honesty, part of me wanted to get him out of his apartment so I’d be sure this wasn’t just about sex.

That wasn’t to say this was an official date. We’d labeled one dinner as such, but we hadn’t talked any more about the status of our relationship. It was still possible that he saw this as a fuck buddies’ night out.

Cedric gave my hand a squeeze, then dropped it. “Let’s go in.”

Inside, the bar was dimly lit. Teams of people were already forming. I went to the bar to get each of us a beer, and Cedric waved at the people he usually played with. When I got to his side, he introduced me. “This is my friend Oriole.”

Friend. I tried not to grimace. If he wanted to label me as that, I wasn’t going to push him for anything more... yet.

I was used to dating out and proud guys, like my ex. We never shied away from public displays of affection, even when we were just starting to date. Cedric was different. I trusted we’d get where we were supposed to be eventually… right?

Taking a sip of my beer, I shook everyone’s hand. I took a seat a few inches away from Cedric, making sure not to do anything that would betray me as more than a friend.

Maybe we should talk about how we were going to approach this, but he’d seemed so calm about kissing in public. I hadn’t realized it was going to be an issue when we were with his friends. Hadn’t realized how much it would hurt to have him not acknowledge who I was to him.

His friends were nice enough, and they made small talk about people they knew as the emcee started to set up. I stayed quiet, smiling and nodding despite how I didn’t know anyone they were talking about.

Finally the preparations were done, and the emcee took hold of the mic. With some relief, I watched as he explained the rules.
