Peter Karpinski, with Florence’s consent, had been in secret negotiations with the Merseyside County Museum (its ethnographic collection is now the Liverpool World Museum). It expressed an interest, launched a hurried search for funds and, with the support of an arts charity, made its own offer. ‘Museum to pay £60,000 for a doorstop,’ reported the Guardian.¹⁵

Peter and Florence wanted the sculpture to be on public display, and felt the museum made a fitting home for an artwork which spoke of Liverpool’s historic ties with West Africa. Christie’s lost out on a twenty per cent commission, and faced legal threats from American dealers who’d travelled across the Atlantic to bid for the Swainson Horseman. ‘We had a man staying at the Ritz shouting down the phone he wanted all his costs reimbursed,’ says Christie’s Hermione Waterfield.¹⁶
