The modern reader is unlikely to approve of a code that permitted Orou to use his wife and daughters in this way. It lends support to the idea, which has been prevalent in history, that women are essentially the sexual property of men to be disposed of as they pleased. But the incident probably tells us more about the Tahitian hospitality code than about its sexual ethics. A more troubling example of the importance of ancient hospitality codes is found in a mysterious story in Genesis. We are told that two angels come to stay with Lot in Sodom. At bedtime the men of Sodom surround the house and demand that Lot let them have his guests for sex:

And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
