Mack made her way in the darkness to Grey. She patted her friend and told him, "We have something that needs to be tended to, Grey. We have a wrong that must be made right."

Mack took a few minutes to check the pouches she had taken from Sarah's root cellar in Georgia that contained herbs: pokeberry, poison hemlock, and moonseed. Sarah's books showed her how to store them, their uses, and how they were to be handled. Sarah had marked large letters on all of these that said DO NOT USE. Mack had made her own notes inside the cover of Jane Eyre before leaving Waynesboro.

While Mack was at the healing house, Leona had showed her yellow jasmine in the cellar.

"I don't understand why this is here," Leona told Mack. "This can kill you."

While they were outside, Leona had taken her to a bush called oleander. "You need to be careful of this plant," Leona warned. "It will kill animal and human alike. All parts of this are deadly—the flowers when they bloom, sap, seeds, and just ten to twenty leaves, green or dry, can kill a full-grown man."

Mack had reentered the cellar that same day and taken the yellow jasmine. She stopped shortly after leaving the healing house and carefully pulled enough leaves from the oleander bush to kill four men. She had taken the time to learn the safe way to touch and mix these plants. A little something that would take care of her problems once she found them. Mack swung into the saddle and, once again, left Washington unnoticed.
