CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

CJ stood in her new master bathroom and scrubbed off a little makeup and a lot of dust from the ride home from Bea and Billy Paul’s house. The new ATV David bought for his father sure was fun to drive. She stepped into the bedroom and couldn’t help but smile at the new mattress and box springs, the first arrivals of their bedroom set. What the home lacked in furniture and furnishings, it made up for in room. She still had a few weeks to feather her nest before David’s father arrived.

The ring of her cell phone brought her gaze down to a number she didn’t recognize.

“Hello—”

A panic-laced voice interrupted. “You have to help us! He’s going to arrest Jim Bo. He can’t go back to jail. He can’t.” Gasps for air halted any further explanation.

CJ took long strides as she exited the bathroom, crossed the bedroom, and made for the back door. As she walked, she asked, “Kay? Kay Weatherby? Is that you?”

“Please help us. We don’t know what to do. I saw it tonight on his calendar.”

CJ burst out the back door, causing David to spring to his feet.

“Hold on, Kay, I’m putting you on speaker phone. My husband is with me.” CJ kept talking. “Kay, do exactly as I say. Take a deep breath and release it slowly. Good. Now, do it again, then tell us what’s going on.”

After the repeated sound of a deep inhale and slow exhale, Kay spoke. “I had thirty minutes left on my shift tonight. The sergeant gave me his keys and sent me to the sheriff’s office to get a report. He said he needed to add something to it.” Kay took another deep breath and let it ease out. “That’s when I saw it written on the sheriff’s calendar.” The deep breaths temporarily stemmed the flow of tears before they came back with a vengeance.

“It’s all right. Take your time,” said David.

Kay struggled to speak through short gasps. “The sheriff has a big desk calendar. He makes little notes on the days when he needs to do something important. When I lifted the report, I saw it.”

CJ had to wait until another round of sobs subsided. “Kay, what did you see?”

“P U J B W,” said Kay before she succumbed again to sobs.

CJ waited in silence until Kay calmed herself.

“Jim Bo is supposed to be off paper on the tenth. On his calendar, the sheriff had written PUJBW on September 7. Only a week and a half left on probation and now he’s going back to jail.”

David spoke. “Kay, those letters mean Pick Up Jim Bo Weatherby, don’t they?”

“Yes. What are we going to do?” Another round of sobbing filled the air space.

David didn’t answer. “Today is the fifth. We still have time. We need to get you and Jim Bo out of there. Don’t call in to work, either of you. Don’t do anything except pack enough clothes for a week. As soon as I hang up, I’m calling a Texas Ranger.
