Chapter Eighteen

After shedding her wet clothes and changing into fleece-lined leggings and a hoodie, Rain was huddled near the fireplace, wrapped in an oversized Sherpa throw. The rocking chair was pulled close enough to the hearth that if she wanted to, she could rest her stocking feet on it. Her hands were tightly woven around a hot mug of herbal tea.

Jace had insisted that he stay with her back at the cabin for at least a half hour, as Rain had refused to go to the hospital to be checked out. As tired as she was, the last thing she wanted was to sit in a waiting room for hours on end, waiting to be seen by a doctor. She knew tomorrow she’d most likely be covered in black and blue, but she figured her ego would be bruised the most. When she’d seen the headlights coming toward her, she should’ve hopped back into the safety of the car. Why had she allowed someone to intimidate her like that? Was it because she couldn’t fathom another human attempting to run her off the road? A sliver of anger ran through her mind before her musings were interrupted when Jace spoke.

“I’m glad you’re okay, Rain. I have to admit, you really had me freaked out back there, finding you lying in the ditch. I didn’t know what I was gonna find,” Jace said with a shake of his head, his back to her. “It could’ve been so much worse,” he added under his breath.

Jace was busy hustling about, loading the stacked stone fireplace with logs. He lit a match and tossed it near the kindling stick that he’d previously added to the middle of the pile. Rain watched as he crouched down, his hands on his knees, and blew into the fireplace before standing back to admire his handiwork.

Rain appreciated his concern but didn’t want any additional mothering from the man. She was afraid if she even hinted at a sore muscle, he’d insist again that she stop in at the Emergency Room, so instead she changed the subject entirely. “The chief had you out on patrol tonight, huh? Seems like they’re keeping you out of the police station and as far away as possible from the murder investigation? Is that your take? You think they’re purposely keeping your nose out of it?”

Jace turned to her and shrugged, leaving his hands in a defensive stance. “Maybe. Probably. Heck if I know,” he said before returning to watch the flames, It seemed he was not quite sure the kindling would take over to his liking, because Rain noticed him prodding the log with the cast-iron poker.

“I really appreciate your offer to take care of my car, but I can have it towed tomorrow if need be …”

Rain wasn’t finished speaking before Jace interrupted. “It’s no worry at all. I’ll stop in at the auto dealer and pick up a new set of wipers. Hopefully, it won’t be snowing too hard for me to get ’em on for ya.
