WORTH A DETOUR

POTRERO FLATS CREATIVE UPSTARTS

San Francisco’s historic Design District has rediscovered its edge with the arrival of avant-garde galleries, showing art that easily upstages beige sofas. Between SoMa and Potrero Hill is a flat expanse dotted with warehouse design-trade showrooms long overlooked, unless you were in the business of selecting window treatments. But ever since the California College of the Arts (Wattis Institute; map Google map; %Wattis Institute 415-355-9670; www.wattis.org; 360 Kansas St; hduring school sessions noon-6pm Tue-Sat; g10, 19, 22, 33) F creatively repurposed the neighborhood’s old bus depot for its campus, the emerging Potrero Flats district (also called ‘SoMissPo,’ for SoMa, Mission and Potrero) is becoming an eye-catcher. Stop at CCA’s campus to discover fresh provocations in student-curated PLAySPACE and the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts.

Head under the highway overpass to discover SOMArts (map Google map; %415-863-1414; www.somarts.org; 934 Brannan St; hgallery noon-7pm Tue-Fri, to 5pm Sat; g8, 9, 10, 19, 27, 47), a nonprofit community hub for creative thinking that hosts shows featuring edible murals, global street dance-offs and new meanings for old words supplied by the pop-up Bureau of Linguistical Reality. Just down the street, the San Francisco Center for the Book (map Google map; %415-906-6417; www.sfcb.org; 375 Rhode Island St; gallery free; hgallery 10am-5:30pm; g8, 10, 19, 22, 33) features shows of handmade pop-up books and matchbook-sized zines, plus workshops for making your own.

The creative pull of Potrero Flats is irresistible now that several of San Francisco’s leading galleries have moved to the neighborhood. The Catharine Clark Gallery (map Google map; %415-399-1439; www.cclarkgallery.com; 248 Utah St; h10:30am-5:30pm Tue-Fri, 11am-6pm Sat; g9, 10, 19, 22, 27, 33) F instigates art revolutions with Masami Teraoka’s monumental paintings of geisha superheroines fending off wayward priests, while the Hosfelt Gallery (map Google map; %415-495-5454; http://hosfeltgallery.com; 260 Utah St; h10am-5:30pm Tue, Wed & Fri & Sat, 11am-7pm Thu; g9, 10, 22, 27, 33) F mesmerizes visitors with Emil Lukas’ drawings made by thousands of fly larvae dragging ink across paper. Meanwhile, collage artists at the Jack Fischer Gallery (map Google map; %415-522-1178; www.jackfischergallery.com; 311 Potrero Ave; h11am-5:30pm Tue-Sat; g8, 9, 22, 27, 33) F bring intriguing interior worlds to life inside a warehouse space off Hwy 101. Friendly art debates continue around the corner at Thee Parkside (map Google map; %415-252-1330; www.theeparkside.com; 1600 17th St; h11am-2am Mon-Sat, to 8pm Sun; g10, 19, 22), where bikers and art students converge for cheap drinks, parking-lot BBQ and vintage photo booth photo-ops. But once alt-rock and punk bands start playing at Bottom of the Hill, artistic differences are set aside and mosh-pit mayhem reigns supreme.
