Once we finish dinner, Helen urges us into the living room. Gene lights the fire before getting comfortable in his chair. Helen makes hot cocoa in the kitchen, and Noah and I sit on the floor and spread our homework out on the coffee table.

“Here we are,” Helen says, bringing in two cups of hot chocolate.

Noah gets up and goes into the kitchen, coming back out with the other two cups in hand. He gives one to his dad and the other to his mom.

“Well, this is lovely.” Helen takes a sip of her cocoa, letting out a long, relaxed exhale.

“This is rather good,” Gene agrees, pushing up his glasses as he takes a sip.

Noah and I work on our homework while Gene and Helen read. We sit quietly, not talking, but all together.

And it’s nice.

The warm fire.

Being in a space where everyone is together.

It’s a lot better than sitting up in my room, trying to study. Because everything becomes a distraction.

I consider giving Helen my art project, but I kind of want to do it when we are alone. Not in front of the whole family.

I also realize that if I open my art folder, I will see Noah’s collage. I decide to wait and focus on my reading for Geography instead.
