The committee decided that each pier and adjoining gullet should be let to a single contractor.4 This resulted in blocks from 47 to 54 feet long (Figs 85â87). It meant that each hammer beam would be the responsibility of a single lessee, which was important as the lessees were to pay for all repairs, including repairs to hammer beams. The committee was successful in attracting competing bids, and the blocks were distributed among eight different lessees. None of the builders seem to have occupied the new houses, and several people who did live on the bridge made unsuccessful bids, such as Gervase Locke, mercer, who had lived in one of the sheds, and Cornelius Harbert, clockmaker.5
