âWhat did you buy?â Justin asks when I walk in the door.
Heâs in the kitchen, which makes me nervous, but I resist the urge to hover. I hear a lid on a pot and the rattling of silverware on the counter. He knows I have that spoon rest right there. I resolve not to enter the kitchen.
âI didnât find anything,â I answer. âIâll just wear something I have. I could wear that pink sweater and some nice slacks or something.â
âSounds good.â
âWhat are you going to wear?â I venture.
He comes from the kitchen. âI donât know. Iâll come up with something. Itâs just at their house, right?â
It sounds like heâs coming. Good. I donât care about anything else.
âIâm making dinner.â He waves his hand in the direction of the kitchen.
âSmells good,â I say, though Iâm not sure what it is. âWhat are you making?â
âI threw a bunch of leftovers in a pot.â
I attempt to recall what was leftover in the fridge and if this food is compatible in a pot.
âOkay. Iâll confirm the reservations for our flight,â I tell him. âGuess Iâll pay and you can reimburse me.â Iâll also book the hotel and car rental while Iâm at it.
âOkay.â He flops on the couch and picks up the remote.
I log onto my computer and confirm our flight. Then I book the car rental, which is more than Iâd expected, and book the room. Again, I marvel at all the expenses Brad had paid when weâd been seeing each other. Heâd paid for my flights, our hotel rooms, and cars, not to mention meals and drinks and anywhere else weâd gone. I hadnât thought about it at the time, but heâd spent quite a bit of money just to see me for fleeting visits. How had his wife never noticed the chunks of money disappearing? I guess she had, eventually, because sheâd caught us in a hotel room. I log off my computer and pick up my phone and hastily text Brad.
I appreciate all the time and money you spent on me. Just wanted you to know.
I poke my head into the living room. âI made the reservations for the flight.â
âOkay.â
âWhenâs dinner?â
âOh!â He jumps up off the couch.
âAdd a little water to the pot,â I call after him.
I go into the bedroom where I pull sweatpants out of my dresser as my phone rings.
âWhat brought that on?â Brad asks.
âI never thought about how much money you spent on me, but you always paid for everything.â I sit on the bed. âI donât know if I ever thanked you.â
âWell, youâre welcome. Youâre worth it.â
âThank you.â
âDoesnât whatâs-his-name spoil you?â
âJustin.â
âJustin. Doesnât he spoil you?â
âNot in that way.â
âHmm.â
âHowâs your new place?â Change the subject. I donât want to discuss Justinâs shortcomings with Brad.
âIâm debating whether to put a skylight in the master bathroom.â
âThat sounds nice. What else are you doing?â
âOh, the usual. New flooring, new windows, paint, countertops, new front door. Upgrading everything.â
âTake before and after pictures,â I say.
He laughs. âWhat for?â
âI want to see the transformation.
