“What did you buy?” Justin asks when I walk in the door.

He’s in the kitchen, which makes me nervous, but I resist the urge to hover. I hear a lid on a pot and the rattling of silverware on the counter. He knows I have that spoon rest right there. I resolve not to enter the kitchen.

“I didn’t find anything,” I answer. “I’ll just wear something I have. I could wear that pink sweater and some nice slacks or something.”

“Sounds good.”

“What are you going to wear?” I venture.

He comes from the kitchen. “I don’t know. I’ll come up with something. It’s just at their house, right?”

It sounds like he’s coming. Good. I don’t care about anything else.

“I’m making dinner.” He waves his hand in the direction of the kitchen.

“Smells good,” I say, though I’m not sure what it is. “What are you making?”

“I threw a bunch of leftovers in a pot.”

I attempt to recall what was leftover in the fridge and if this food is compatible in a pot.

“Okay. I’ll confirm the reservations for our flight,” I tell him. “Guess I’ll pay and you can reimburse me.” I’ll also book the hotel and car rental while I’m at it.

“Okay.” He flops on the couch and picks up the remote.

I log onto my computer and confirm our flight. Then I book the car rental, which is more than I’d expected, and book the room. Again, I marvel at all the expenses Brad had paid when we’d been seeing each other. He’d paid for my flights, our hotel rooms, and cars, not to mention meals and drinks and anywhere else we’d gone. I hadn’t thought about it at the time, but he’d spent quite a bit of money just to see me for fleeting visits. How had his wife never noticed the chunks of money disappearing? I guess she had, eventually, because she’d caught us in a hotel room. I log off my computer and pick up my phone and hastily text Brad.

I appreciate all the time and money you spent on me. Just wanted you to know.

I poke my head into the living room. “I made the reservations for the flight.”

“Okay.”

“When’s dinner?”

“Oh!” He jumps up off the couch.

“Add a little water to the pot,” I call after him.

I go into the bedroom where I pull sweatpants out of my dresser as my phone rings.

“What brought that on?” Brad asks.

“I never thought about how much money you spent on me, but you always paid for everything.” I sit on the bed. “I don’t know if I ever thanked you.”

“Well, you’re welcome. You’re worth it.”

“Thank you.”

“Doesn’t what’s-his-name spoil you?”

“Justin.”

“Justin. Doesn’t he spoil you?”

“Not in that way.”

“Hmm.”

“How’s your new place?” Change the subject. I don’t want to discuss Justin’s shortcomings with Brad.

“I’m debating whether to put a skylight in the master bathroom.”

“That sounds nice. What else are you doing?”

“Oh, the usual. New flooring, new windows, paint, countertops, new front door. Upgrading everything.”

“Take before and after pictures,” I say.

He laughs. “What for?”

“I want to see the transformation.
