WITCH TRIALS
Witch trials were carried out at the beginning of the 1450s across England. Luckily, the men and women of Kent suffered far less than those in other counties. Four women were executed in Faversham for witchcraft, and five from Cranbrook. One from Lenham was hanged, but most of the witch trials in Kent ended in acquittals.
THE RESTORATION
In 1660 King Charles II landed at Dover to reclaim the throne. One of the men prominent in the organisation of the return was Samuel Pepys, who spent some time in Deal planning the event. He recorded his impressions in a diary, and these were not altogether complimentary. He was often rowed ashore to visit the pubs and taverns and was particularly fond of Margate ale. Pepys was one of the men who accompanied the king on his journey across Kent and into London, although the party of travellers grew as it progressed. Charles was greeted on Barham Downs by the county nobility and foot regiments of Kent, who escorted him to Canterbury and then to London via Rochester. The party stopped at Restoration House in Crow Lane, where the king was entertained on the night before the official restoration.
