EMBODYING AWARENESS INTELLIGENCE

This practice can act as the preparatory phase for all parts work.

1. Align with presence as described on this page.

2. Now that you are feeling some of the clarity of direct wakefulness, we will personalize presence through sensations, leading you to more distinctly inhabiting your own body and noticing the immediacy of the moment pulsing through you by traveling from head to toe. Pay particular attention to any overt pain, pleasure, or simple aliveness currently there. Allowing Awareness Intelligence to lovingly occupy the entire physical body will help ground your attention in the now, while learning to recognize how many of your parts express themselves specifically through various detectable sensations. For clarification, being aware of something is often used to describe directing our attention, whereas AI encompasses attentional choices and a dimension of consciousness that is not only alert to whatever we are attending to but also awake from the field within us that is naturally vast, loving, and aware of itself.

3. Feel into your belly region first, the hara, and notice any pulsations there. If you feel somewhat soft and spatially wide in the area of your lower abdomen—even if physically you are feeling hunger, constipation, or are pregnant—you can trust there is enough essence energy present to continue this practice. If instead there is tension, numbness, or a sense of condensed containment in the belly region, no doubt a part is taking up the inner space, obscuring your capacity for curious and kind engagement. You can gently ask this part if it would be willing to step to the side for now, letting it know that you are going to come back to it in a bit, as this may need to be the target part for today.

4. Move from your belly area to your crown, feeling any sensations moving around or in your head. If there is a lot of noise of self-talk filling your brain, invite this commotion to flow out of your head into the space in front of you on the next few exhalations and repeat this as often as needed.

5. From here, begin to travel down your body. Sweep your Awareness Intelligence through your face and back of your head, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. Pause in your chest. This is the energetic heart center and the seat of compassion. Notice if you can find some flavor of openness and gentleness residing here.

6. If not, there is some pain in a part that will need attending to. Acknowledge this heavyheartedness, whether mild or major, by quietly, slowly breathing consciously for a minute or so, while saying to yourself, I know this is here and I am willing to be with myself and this issue as I am right now. Then ask this part if it is willing to give you some space by toning down its intensity about 20 degrees or even moving to the side of your body just for the time it takes to fully enter your somatic expression everywhere, allowing you to experience a body-based awareness for now.
