1. TAKE IT IN

Once you are listening from within the speaker’s frame of reference, search for the crux, the kernel, the essence of her message. Sometimes that can be difficult to ferret out. The main point sometimes is obscured by a clutter of anecdotes or irrelevant side issues. The listener’s job at this point is to penetrate through any distracting details to get at the essence of the message. You may find it helpful to ask yourself: “What’s the essence/point of this part of what’s being said?”
