Chapter 15

Dash once again watched the door of the Ashford house slam shut with him on the other side. Shadows moved against the windows of the great room before one turned away and moved out of sight.

He counted the seconds it’d take to move up the stairs, then down the hall. He trailed after Colette in his head.

What the fuck had happened?

She'd given him no explanations. No words at all, even. From the moment she loaded into his truck, it was like she'd disappeared completely. Her body occupied the same physical space as his, but he doubted she'd heard any of his attempts to draw her into conversation. She'd retreated back behind her walls and into a mile-high tower surrounded by crocodiles.

His lion roared through his head. Claws slashed at his insides. Fangs pressed against his gums. Sendings flashed like someone had hit the fast-forward button of a murder spree. Red, so much red, with that asshole from the bar torn to pieces in the middle of the bloody storm.

No one touched his mate. No one made her smell of fear and fury.

Fuck, he’d been so worried when he turned to find her at a table with someone else. His blood had pounded in his ears when that man reached for her hand. They’d looked awfully cozy together from his spot across the bar.

And then he’d lurched to a stop and heard her pulse racing. That’d been enough for his lion. The other shifter had to go.

Except she’d stopped him and hightailed it out of the bar like her hair was on fire.

Dash eyed the front door. He wanted to bang it down and demand answers, but he knew it was the wrong move. There was no talking to her when she was locked up tight. Pushing for more wouldn’t tickle any answers out of her. She’d probably stab him if he kept trying.

She needed time. Space. Things that went against his every instinct to stick by her side and protect her from any and all threats. How the fuck could he be her mate if she wouldn’t let him in?

Ethan yanked open the door and glared into the night. Dash knew better than to try to muscle his way past the alpha bear, even if he stood between him and his mate. She needed time to cool off, and he needed time to figure out how to sneak past her defenses.

Dash lifted his fingers from his steering wheel in a halfhearted greeting, then tore off the ranch.

His lion fought him every rotation of his wheels.

He glared at the road leading to his den, then kept on driving. Last thing he wanted was Trent giving him the told-you-so lecture or worse, those big cow eyes filled with pity because his damn mate wanted nothing to do with him.

A fight was off the table, too. His lion ripped claws through his middle and roared in his head. Not loud enough. He could still hear the damn silence from Colette.

No, no fights. Not until he had a fingernail of control.
