KNOX

I don’t want to speak too soon, but I’m on a fucking high the morning of Thanksgiving. Knowing about Marshall and Ava, Emerson saying yes to my proposal, and Ivory behind bars where she can’t show up and ruin the day with her bullshit.

“What are you doing?” Emerson asks when I walk up behind her and take the spoon from her hand. “I need to get this done before the caterers get here with the food.”

“You’ll get it done. But first, I want to make out with my future wife,” I say, turning Emerson around. She wraps her arms over my shoulders and her hands on my nape at the same time I reach down to wrap my hands around the round globes of her ass.

“First of all, eww, get a room… and second, oh my fucking God, big brother. That rock is chef’s kiss. Damn, I want one,” Kiara says.

“Good morning, Kiara,” Emerson says to my sister.

“Good morning, future sister-in-law,” Kiara says, and I like how Emerson grins in response. “So, are you finally moving in? Please say you are.”

“That hasn’t been decided yet. I thought I was about to start looking for a house of my own, but maybe not?” Emerson questions and then looks at me.

“Don’t look at me. I asked you to move in a long time ago. Are you finally agreeing to do that?”

“I… I guess I am.”

“You’re saying you’re going to give up your townhouse to move into my house? Is that what you’re saying?” I ask, just to be clear. Emerson has been insistent she stay in her townhouse, needing that independence. She stays there overnight at least once a week, sometimes more when she feels like she’s hanging around too much. She’s never hanging around too much since I want her to hang around all the time. But she doesn’t believe me when I tell her that. She thinks people don’t love people that much because her own mother couldn’t love her that much.

“That’s what I’m saying.”

Emerson finishes the desserts then lets the caterers in to set up dinner. She effortlessly manages the catering crew and arranges dinner service for nearly a dozen people. When she’s done, she disappears to get ready and doesn’t return until all the guests arrive. She does this on purpose, so her arrival won’t be as noticeable, but of course, her father and Seneca notice. They make a big deal of her arrival, and Marshall wrongly assumes she came here early to cook and brought a change of clothes for dinner.

She walks into the room in skin-tight jeans and a chunky cream sweater and heels to match. Her hair is pulled up into a ponytail, and her face is softly made up just the way I like. What I don’t like is the fact she isn't wearing my ring, even though I understand why she’s not wearing it.

Dinner goes well, not that I expected anything less. My baby knows what the fuck she is doing, just like she knows what she’s doing with the books at Hart Landscaping and managing her bakery.
