Chapter 6

Say? She almost laughed aloud because clearly he wasn’t really giving her a choice, they were already driving out of town!

He may have abandoned his worse traits, but Caleb Walker was still a force to be reckoned with and a man who was used to getting his own way. She had only to remember how he had strode into the hotel yesterday, the staff hopping to attention, including poor Mr. Cranston with all of his nervous twitching—

“What’s so amusing?”

“You, Caleb, you. If I demanded this very instant that you turn around and drive me back to the hotel, would you do it?”

He laughed, shaking his head, but when he glanced at her and saw that she was serious, he immediately sobered. “Of course. Your wish is my command…always, Lily. Always.”

His unexpected reply and the sincere tone of his voice endearing him even more to her, Lily felt such a catch in her throat that she had to look away. Yet when she suddenly felt him slowing the carriage as if to honor her request, she gasped and tightened her grasp on his arm.

“I didn’t mean it, Caleb!”

“No? Then you think mine a fine idea?”

“Yes, yes, it’s perfectly fine…but what about my luggage and Monique?”

“Ah, your lady’s maid. I knew I’d forgotten something. She seems an anxious little Nellie, always watching every move you make. She hid in the shadows the entire time you attended the reception as if she didn’t want you to see her. How long has she been in your employ?”

“Less than two months,” Lily murmured, not sure where Caleb might be going with his inquiry. “Yes, she’s a bit high-strung, but I’ve found her to be competent and trustworthy.”

“Perhaps not so trustworthy that you looked startled to see her leaving the telegraph office. Remember? Your expressive face?”

Lily felt herself stiffen beside him, Caleb far more observant than she had imagined. “She came very highly recommended by my doctor so I’m sure there’s no cause for concern—”

“Your doctor?”

Lily did her best to appear calm and nonchalant, though she couldn’t believe she had mentioned her physician. “Of course, everyone has a doctor, don’t they? You have Seth’s father in Walker Creek, Charles Davis. I have Dr. Horace Buchanan in San Francisco. Perhaps Monique wanted to contact family that she was safe and sound in the wilds of Texas. She makes a generous wage and can certainly pay to send a telegraph if she wishes.”

Caleb said nothing as he flicked the reins, the horses picking up their pace along the bumpy road, while Lily sought to change the subject.

“How far from town is your ranch?”

“Another mile.” He glanced at her with a thoughtful look on his face that told her Caleb wasn’t ready, much to her dismay, to move on to another topic.

“Dr. Horace Buchanan. Interesting name. Is he young? Old?”

“No, somewhere in the middle, like us. I’ve known him for a while.”

“Married? A widower?”

“Married, I believe, but I’ve never met his wife—Caleb, that looks like Seth riding toward
