Chapter Twenty-Four

A NEW PLAN

“I canna shake the feeling that there’s something on yer mind,” Logan grumbled as they walked back the long corridor toward the great hall. The entire keep was afire with torchlight, a cheerful reminder of the warmth that filled the ancient stone walls this night, delighted voices and music echoing along its corridors. “Ye look...” He frowned at her, his gaze watchful... and suspicious.

Yvaine shrugged, casting her brother an unconcerned smile. “I dunna ken what ye speak of. I told ye I simply needed a wee bit of fresh air.” She heaved a deep breath, willing a look of exhaustion upon her face despite the energy that hummed in her limbs since meeting Caelen—Caelen!—in the garden. “’Tis been a long night, and I felt a bit unsteady upon my feet.” She paused and met Logan’s quizzical gaze. “I doubt Father would have approved if I’d fainted in front of his guests. Or what should I have done?” Yvaine asked, remembering Caelen’s urgings to act like a lady, to gain her father’s trust. Of course, it would not be easy. He was seated at the head of the table, looking more imposing than ever surrounded by his guests. Her heart beat a bit faster as she walked forward, Logan just behind her.

Yvaine bowed before her father and spoke in a voice that was calm yet steady. “Father,” she addressed him, grateful for the noise echoing through the hall that kept her words between them, “I apologize for my earlier behavior. I didna wish to embarrass ye. Yet I ken now that I oughtna have left without an escort. Logan already counseled me on proper behavior.”

Though a touch of disbelief remained in her father’s gaze, he nodded in acceptance of her apology.

Yvaine sighed, offering him a weak smile. “I am tired from this long day and would like to retire to my chamber if ye will permit it.”

Her father’s face softened slightly as he looked upon her with a mixture of relief and pride. “Of course, my dear,” he said kindly, the expression upon his face one of triumph; after all, he did not truly see her as a threat to his plans. Well, she would prove him wrong.

Eventually.

For now, she needed to bide her time, though.

Yvaine smiled gratefully before taking her leave of her father and Logan as well, relieved that everything had worked out so well. She felt lighter now that she had an ally, now that
