“Yeah.” Robert drawled out the word. He seemed to give

himself a shrug. “Anyway, I found your parents and got a

more… pleasant… response from them.”

Max furrowed his brow. “When was that? Mom’s not

said a thing to me.” He was going to have words with his

mother about keeping secrets.

“I asked her not to. I didn’t know when I could get here

because of filming. I called her about a month ago. Then I

suddenly got a weekend free. She told me you were off and it

seemed that everything was falling into place. I flew down

yesterday morning and I’m flying back Sunday evening.”

“Not long, then,” Max said, trying not to sound hurt. It

was stupid to get upset over something so trivial as a short

visit.

Robert pulled Max into a hug. “Believe me, Max, if I

could I’d take the next week off, but the next time I get free

other than the odd day is Thanksgiving.”

“I’ll be working then,” Max said absently, pulling back to

sit down again.

“Thought you might.”

“So what now?” Max asked.

Robert stared at his hands for a minute before he said,

“I can’t quit my job now. I need the money to pay off the

divorce costs.”

“I get that. It must be awful having that hanging over

your head.”

“I can’t rock the boat either. If it gets out I’m gay then I

can kiss my career goodbye.”
