Chapter Eleven
The last thing Sandy knew was Lukeâs voice whispering in her head, Donât go, and the last thing she felt was his warm breath on her face.
Mary was inconsolable.
Two days later, they buried Sandy. The funeral was poignantly dignified. As the coffin was lowered, Mary laid a tiny pair of shoes on top. Seeing this, Luke let go of his motherâs hand and went to stand beside Mary. He reached down and laid his own tribute on the lid: the plastic cowboy. He wanted Jake to go with Sandy wherever she was going. He knew that, with his protection, her journey would be safe.
When he looked up, he noticed a figure watching the funeral from a distance. It was the Lost Boy. He was hiding in some trees at the edge of the graveyard. He had found some more clothes and shoes, but he still looked a mess. When he realised that Luke was looking at him, he raised a hand in greeting, then turned into the shadows of the trees and walked away.
Luke looked around to see if anybody else had noticed him but everybody had their eyes downcast as the priest prayed over the grave. I wonder if Iâm the only one who can see him, Luke thought. He saw his mother looking at him, signalling to him to stand beside her again. He put the Lost Boy out of his mind for the moment as he linked her arm.
He thought again of Sandy, and he felt a hole opening in his soul when he realised the loss of her. He wanted to just fall through the hole, to sink forever. He leaned closer to his mother, hiding in her long coat as his tears coursed down his cheeks, unhindered.
They tried to keep their voices down. They didnât want Mary to hear. It was her house, after all, and her child had just been buried. Avril had told Mary they would stay with her in Glasnevin for a few days.
Luke heard it all, however, sitting in the room next door with his ear to the wall.
âI donât see how you have to go now,â Avril whispered tensely.
âAvril, itâs probably the best chance we have of finding out. I have to go while Pitford is here,â Fran tried to sound as reasonable as he could.
âCome on, we can go at any time. We donât need to do it while that man is here. Besides, I think heâs a phony.â
Fran was in a huff. âWell, I donât. I think weâre on the right trail here. I donât understand you. Just last week, you were all enthusiastic about finding out everything we can.â
âWell, this isnât last week. Anyway, what about Mary? Sheâs devastated. She needs as much support as she can get.â
âSandy wasnât our child. Luke is.â Fran regretted it as soon as the words were out, but it was too late.
Avrilâs voice had risen a notch. âOh, Christ, Fran, whatâs gotten into you?â
âOK, Iâm sorry, I didnât mean that. I donât want to sound heartless, but I want to do whatâs best for our son.
