TRANS STATS: STARTING POINTS
As with most statistics regarding LGBTQ people, approximations of the size of the trans population are likely affected by underreporting based on stigma.
HRC estimates that between 0.25 percent and 1 percent of Americans identify as trans.4
The most frequently cited numerical estimate of the trans population is 700,000 in the United States and 15 million worldwide.5
In June 2016, the Williams Institute released a report with updated figures. Based on the latest data available from the CDC, the report estimated that 0.6 percent of the U.S. population—or 1.4 million adults—identify as transgender. In addressing the fact that this figure is twice as high as their 2011 estimate of 700,000, the researchers said: “A perceived increase in visibility and social acceptance of transgender people may increase the number of individuals willing to identify as transgender on a government-administered survey.”6
