NOTES

1. The acting colonel of the Thirty-Sixth Wisconsin was George Fisk from Sparta, Wisconsin. Fisk was in command of the Thirty-Sixth Wisconsin during the Battle of Hatcher’s Run, October 27, 1864. According to James Aubery, “Special mention was made in all the reports by the commanding generals of the regiment and of Capt Fisk’s ‘Cool, daring, gallant conduct.’ . . . Captain Fisk was one of the best Officers in the regiment. He was admired and respected by every man” (Thirty-Sixth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, 337–39).

2. Lincoln first issued a proclamation of Thanksgiving on October 3, 1863. In 1864, Thanksgiving was celebrated on November 24.

3. The primary responsibility of the Commissary Department for both the Union and the Confederacy was to feed troops. The organization was responsible for purchasing, storing, and distributing food to the soldiers.

4. Rations refers to the amount of food authorized for one soldier or animal for one day. Rations varied throughout the war as circumstances changed.
