If the passive suffix is -a the noun derivative suffix will be -nga; if the passive suffix is -ia the noun derivative suffix will be -anga. In all other cases the initial consonant of the passive suffix will be the same as the initial consonant of the noun derivative suffix.

27.4 Meaning of derived nouns

Derived nouns have meanings which may be related to the meaning of the underlying base in either or both of the following ways:

(i) The derived noun may refer to the circumstance, occasion, or time of the action or state expressed by the underlying base. Moe is a universal meaning ‘to sleep’ or ‘to marry’. The derived noun moenga means ‘the occasion of sleeping, marrying’. The universal base rapu means ‘to seek’. The derived noun rapunga means the ‘occasion of seeking’. The universal mahi means ‘work, do’; the derived noun mahinga means the ‘occasion of working, doing’. The stative mutu means ‘be ended, finished’. Mutunga means ‘occasion of ending, finishing’.

(ii) A noun derived from a universal may also refer to some physical object or place associated with the action or state expressed in the underlying base. Moenga also means ‘bed’; mahinga also means ‘garden, cultivation’.
